Date: Mon, 28 Oct 2002 21:45:31 -0500 (EST) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding #129:News,Politics,and More My apologies for typo-ing John Lumea's name last mailing. http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/60715.htm is a story telling of the wrangling over the desire of some to cut down the office space on the WTC site below that needed to fill new towers as large as the old Twins...I think that letters to letters@nypost.com highlighting the shamefulness of smaller towers on the site as a consequence of inappropriate reduction of the site's office space would be a good idea. http://www.wnbc.com/news/1744215/detail.html is a transcription of WNBC's brief interviews with the three leading candidates for Governor of New York on what should be built at the WTC site. None of them sound particularly promising,as we might expect... and they all sound rather similar.McCall says two contradictory things...that the memorial "has got to be dominant on the site" and "we've got to replace as much of the commercial space that was destroyed as possible".He does say the memorial "shouldn't take over the entire site",while Pataki's comments, though they don't seem to explicitly mention that, were interpreted as allowing it as a possible outcome on the WNBC television broadcast tonight. Pataki interprets his daughter's interest in seeing the Oklahoma City memorial this summer as showing that people generations into the future will want to see a September 11th memorial that "has to be" the focus of the site. If it's not in the protective shadow of positively tremendous office towers....it will be a backwater,as the history of other memorials has shown! Derek Turner reports that his wtc2002.com site will soon be offering new optional modifications to his design, and says his efforts are "not self-promotion,but putting my money where my mouth is"...but anyone offering one bold design against the pathetic products of the official process is not trying to compete with other bold designs! The one comment I've gotten on the architectural program draft, from an expert architectural adviser,is encouraging...I'd like to have it polished and ready before the rally. Rally planning is proceeding despuite adversities...offers of assistance are VERY welcome. For example...is there anyone who can bring something that speakers can stand on to the rally site by 11 AM on November 2nd? If you have something practical please **LET US KNOW ASAP** so we can save on rental of a platform!!! (Write to me at le@put.com of course). Weather forecasts for the rally day,November 2nd,are now saying rain, but five days in advance of the last rally day, when it DID rain, they were not yet predicting rain...let's hope that once again the forecasts change, this time in the better direction! See you on the 111th floor on 9-11-11! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
