Date: Mon, 14 Mar 2005 13:12:01 -0500 (EST) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding #349:More Press and Pressure Peter Walukiewicz alerted me that David Shuster has again returned to the Towers-Rebuilding issue at his "Hardblogger" column at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5445086/ . Note that I am cc'ing Shuster on this list-email besides the main email list on blind copy. Thank you to those of you who sent me copies of John Avlon's New York Sun article, which is indeed another specifically-pro-Gardner/Belton piece. We all know of course that the rebuilding movement has been there from the day the Towers fell, with officialdom resolutely ignoring it with the single-mindedness of the technician whose wiring every single strain gage the wrong way prompted Captain Ed Murphy to enter the English language with his observation "If there is any way to do it wrong,he will". I know Ken Gardner doesn't believe he invented the rebuilding movement,or that his plan is the only plan that does the right thing.(As noted,my main objection to his version is that it totally surrenders both of the old footprints to exclusively memorial use, rather than demanding the debate that Governor Pataki forbade to be held despite polls showing evenly divided public opinion on whether the footprints should be reclaimed for the purposes to which and for which the victims gave their lives).I know that pro-rebuilders can differ on details while remaining united on the principles that bring us together and should bar the official plans. I hope Shuster will read my commentaries at http://www.put.com/wtc/comments.html on the past stages of the official process which has meticulously refused to consider any plans not making mandated mistakes.Shuster mentions the Environmental Impact Statement and the Restoration Alternative in his column, and my EIS comments make reference to the unfairness with which the Restoration Alternative is evaluated. (He might as well take a look at some of the other good designs at http://www.put.com/wtc/ too). He looks forward to the 2008 presidential elections and whether candidates can deflect Pataki's desperate stampede down the wrong path, but the 2005 Mayoral and New Jersey and 2006 New York gubernatorial elections offer even earlier opportunities to replace advocates of the Libescheme with those who may be open to doing the right thing. By all means write to Shuster from whatever pro-rebuilding angle you are comfortable with...we are here and must be heard! Other recent press of note: http://nypost.com/news/regionalnews/40979.htm notes an overheating in the Downtown real estate market, at least residentially.(Bloomberg's obsession with helping the already excessive Downtown population growth rate will hit any future administration with infrastructure problems. Better to help the Financial District retain its historic character as a unique area than make it just another one of the 24/7 communities!) http://nypost.com/postopinion/letters/41023.htm has two letters approaching the West Side Stadium from opposite angles, but one attacks the Fraud'em Tower's empty top in appealing for the Stadium to be built, and the other (from Tal Barzilai) says the taxpayer money proposed for the stadium would be better used restoring the Twins. See you on the 111th floor on 9-11-11! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
