As on previous occasions,I've let a couple of weeks of stories pile up before writing you all. However...this time I'm predicting a story in tomorrow's (Tuesday's) Post and I want hostile letters (to letters@nypost.com) ready as soon as it's out! More at the end of this email. The first thing spotted was propaganda about the restaurant at the Fraud'em Tower...said to be on the "100th/101st floors"?? http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-attacks-redevelopment-restaurant,0,847892.story http://nypost.com/seven/01302008/news/regionalnews/foodies_would_vie_fot_really_haute_cuisi_216529.htm As we know, that building won't have that many floors...and the FT restaurant will be at about 1,250 feet where Windows on the World was at about 1,300 feet. Further, the indoor observation deck for the FT is the FLOOR BELOW the restaurant, where the South Tower's was on the analogous floor to WotW in the North Tower and thus six feet lower. Scorecard...heights in feet : Twin Towers FT Antenna 1,728 1,776 Roof platform 1,374 1,368 Taller roof 1,368 1,362 OHSL 1,355 ~1,345 Restaurant ~1,310 1,250 Obs deck ~1,300 1,235 The ~ dimensions are approximate...the pattern is clear, retreat on EVERYTHING but the antenna...and NO retreat is acceptable! (I am generously assuming that the 1,250 ft figure is the LOWER restaurant floor,if not,the obs deck goes down another 15). Sky-High Restaurant, Four Seasons Hotel Headed To WTC Site January 29, 2008 Developer Larry Silverstein announced Tuesday that construction on the three major towers planned for the Would Trade Center site should begin in the next few weeks. After years of delays and recent fines imposed against the agency for missing the excavation deadline, Silverstein reports things are now on track. The Port Authority is wrapping up its massive evacuation work. Nearly 300,000 tons of concrete, soil and rock have been removed in the year-long project. Silverstein says that means Towers 2, 3 and 4 can begin to take shape. The towers will be 78, 71 and 61 stories respectively. "We start construction shortly, very shortly. And that work is going to be completed in about two or three weeks. Therefore these buildings are going to start -- middle of next month, up we go," said Silverstein. The buildings will reach street level approximately one year after the start of construction. Towers Three and Four will top out by mid-2010, with Tower 2 following in the early part of 2011." In another sign of progress, Silverstein also announced a deal with Four Seasons to build what will be the largest residential building in the city. The 80-story tower at 99 Church Street -- just one block from the site -- will hold 143 condos and 175 luxury hotel rooms. "It will stand as the tallest residential building in New York and add to Downtown's growing stock of luxury, first-class housing," said Silverstein. Construction on that project is set to start in June and be wrapped up by early 2011. In another sign of progress the Port Authority is putting out a call for a restaurant to occupy the Freedom Tower's top floor, just like the Windows on the World restaurant that used to occupy the north tower at the World Trade Center. The Port Authority is accepting bids from restaurant operators to set up shop atop the Freedom Tower. The plan calls for a restaurant on the 100th and 101st floors of the new building with 360-degree views of the city. While many moved away from the area after 9/11 the president of the Downtown Alliance says projects like this are luring people back. "I think there are signs that we really have created a 21st century, global business center. It's a live, work 24/7 community and it's very exciting," said Downtown Alliance president Elizabeth Berger. The chairperson of Community Board One also tells us the area is back on track. "Of course there are always going to be setbacks, but overall I think we are headed in the right direction,"said chairperson Julie Menin. The Freedom Tower is expected to open in 2012, with the restaurant slated to open in 2013. http://www.ny1.com/ny1/content/index.jsp?stid=1&aid=77947 ---------- End forwarded message ---------- ...the hotel, near the Woolworth Building, would be another part of making the "new WTC" blend in to the local buildings rather than standing boldly and majestically apart. The LMDC, which owns the building that was irreparably damaged in the Sept. 11 attacks, says the tower will be demolished by the end of the year. Deconstruction ceased last August after two firefighters died battling a blaze in the tower. Before work stopped, ridding the building of contaminants such as asbestos was conducted in tandem with the deconstruction. John Galt Corp., which was demolishing the building, was fired after the blaze, and LVI Services Inc. was hired last month to replace it. ---------- End forwarded message ---------- .....NOW!!!!!!!!!! This arrived on the wires this evening... TOMORROW'S NY Post is likely to hail it as "progress"... the sites for the two smallest Libescheme "towers" were turned over by the PA to Silverstein on Sunday... http://www.newsday.com/news/nationworld/wire/sns-ap-attacks-redevelopment,0,1480340.story SEND THEM LETTERS THAT OPPOSE THIS "PROGRESS"!! Those two buildings TOGETHER don't have the square footage of ONE Twin Tower...but if they WERE merged into one building AT LEAST the height of the FT,it would not only be SAFER (remember Attia's principle),but it would make the Libescheme NEARLY forgivable.
