Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 12:58:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC:Doctoroff Cancels,Muschamp Plans,Whitehead Turns Deaf Ears Deputy Mayor Doctoroff's Gotham Gazette Java-chat tomorrow has been cancelled! The next guest there will be the Whitehead clique's head of memorial planning,Anita Contini, next week. Do check out the GG's "Ground Zero Planner",and don't forget CNN's WTC-Ideas page. Reconstruction Report (link at http://www.put.com/wtc/ of course) reports that Herbert Muschamp, the Tower-hating,empty-footprint-demanding NY Times architecture critic, plans to announce HIS vision for the WTC site on September 8th,aided by some planners. RR has an mainly anti-Towers stance, they applaud worries about "too much office space downtown freezing the market in midtown", but they did print a pro-Towers piece by our own Alex Butziger. (I do think he's overly specific in saying "1368 and 1362 feet" as minimum for new towers, the figure we need to press on the public is "nothing shorter than 1368" (roofline, with the North Tower's antenna and occupied human space limits also holding)). It might be worth submitting more pro-building-tall comments. Online-LTTC set up an "Open Forum" for post-mortem discussion between its participants...but it's not accessible to those of us who were registered but denied the ability to join groups. One would think they would be MORE likely to let us in to "off the record" chat! Anyway, despite the calls for taller towers coming out of Online-LTTC, the Whitehead clique appear to be preparing a smaller-scale plan... http://www.nypost.com/news/regionalnews/54752.htm has the details, and the NY Daily News has a story linked from RR that calls the reduction in office space "Tops on the wish list" at LTTC,when once again, the BIGGEST COMPLAINT WAS THAT THE BUILDINGS WERE TOO SHORT!...not sure which of the nydailynews.com online forums is the one to lodge complaints in. We've GOT to get our pro-taller-buildings site plan comments in! Andrew Oliff posted a good comparison of the archmemorialists' current whinings with the response after Pearl Harbor,at the NYCS board. Mitra Samadani reports that a direct contact address for the August 29th meeting at the Battery Park City Embassy Suites (to be televised on New York 1 but targeted for survivors, rescue workers/volunteers,and Lower Manhattanites) is nchaynes@yahoo.com...PLEASE try to attend if you qualify! Elia Attia's petition for an open design competition is now close to 10,000 signatures. See you on the 111th floor on 9-11-11! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
