Date: Fri, 16 Aug 2002 21:40:33 -0400 (EDT) From: Louis Epstein Subject: WTC Rebuilding:Revised Timetable With this mailing I acknowledge the contribution of over 60 fresh addresses of supporters furnished by Derek Turner of wtc2002.com. That brings the list to the vicinity of 900 supporters of rebuilding the World Trade Center not one inch shorter in one form or another! As ever,a request from an address on the list to have it removed is always promptly honored. Mr. Turner also faxed some cover letters he had used in sending weekly updates and sample emails to Whitehead,Garvin,Bloomberg, Pataki,McGreevey,Senators Schumer and Clinton, and some others...I note with amusement that he regularly updates Monica Iken on the progress of support for his project,I hope she finds it demoralizing for her effort to leave the site as empty as commanded by bin Laden! His site has been running a poll comparing his design to the six configurations of stunted symbols of surrender envisioned by Beyer Blinder Belle, and his design beats them by a massive margin... in all fairness, any visionary effort at full-scale reconstruction against those atrocities is "like taking candy from a baby"! However, whether we be "Turnerites",or "Siebists" (supporters of Erik Sieb's newwtcproject.com) or "Yamasaki-holics" (those who desire the former design to be rebuilt as closely as possible) or full-size-or-more reconstructionists of any other stripe...we must unite behind the banner of "not one inch shorter" to give our preferred visions the chance of realization. Today I established that the public comment period for the "Phase I" site plans has been extended from August 19th to September 30th... and I once again urge everyone reading this to make sure they take advantage of this AND the future opportunities for sending in comments on the plans.Addresses and so forth are on the resource link page at http://www.put.com/wtc/ and I keep this updated as possible without repeating things in every mailing. The September 5th "public meeting" takes the place of the "public hearing" that had been set for "the first week in August" under the old timeline from before the broad condemnation of the six Phase I site plans. The four outer-borough "public meetings" between now and then are additions...they are NOT,as the giveyourvoice.com site implied, primarily about the memorial. THOSE IN THE NYC AREA SHOULD GET TO AT LEAST ONE OF THESE...IF YOU CAN ONLY MAKE ONE,GET TO THE MANHATTAN ONE.Given the bad reception the first six plans got as such, they are looking mainly for comments on the ELEMENTS of the plans, and we need to address these unambiguously to give them as little room as possible for twisting our message into what they want to hear. We are NOT concerned with their reducing the amount of office space, we want them to reduce the number of office BUILDINGS into fewer,TALLER ones. When we advocate construction of an icon that makes a major statement on the skyline,we do NOT mean an ornamental pole sticking hundreds of feet up from a human-occupied level that compares unfavorably to many buildings in the city and nation. We want boldness,to honor the spirit of those who died...not timorous echoes of the most devastated survivors' grief that have the effect of cementing the legacy of the murderers. We DON'T care particularly about restoring the old streets, ensuring the old footprints are vacant-down-to-bedrock,or other concerns voiced by our opponents. The bottom line is human presence back in the skies every bit as high as before, ideally even higher, and THAT is what turns any memorial into the honor to the fallen that it should be,and not a sad scar beneath concrete evidence that the murderers prevailed. Volunteers for the petition/literature efforts getting underway this week (they still need a lightweight table for street work!) are still welcome, write to me and I'll put you in touch with the active people in Manhattan. SURVIVORS,RESCUE WORKERS,DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS...if you can make the televised New York 1 meeting in Battery Park City on August 29th please contact nchaynes@yahoo.com to reserve a space!! NEW YORK RESIDENTS...send pro-rebuilding questions for the August 18th WCBS Radio debate between the two Democratic gubernatorial primary hopefuls to cbsnewyork@hotmail.com. My mother was speaking this evening of when she was a child in occupied Norway during the Second World War...the Nazis tucked a U-boat base underneath a children's school in a bid to protect it,and the school was bombed with hundreds of children killed... IT WAS REBUILT,not converted to a memorial park. See you on the 111th floor on 9-11-11!! -=-=- The World Trade Center towers MUST rise again, at least as tall as before...or terror has triumphed.
