World Trade Center Restoration Movement FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 8, 2002 RALLY OCTOBER 11 TO REBUILD THE WTC NEW YORK CITY - On Friday, October 11, hundreds of people are expected to rally at City Hall Park in New York City for rebuilding the World Trade Center as tall or taller than the previous towers. Advocates for rebuilding will speak. The keynote speaker will be Johathan Hakala, head of Threshold Capital Management and a 77th floor survivor from the North Tower. Another highlight will be the reading of a statement by Philippe Petit, the high wire artist who surprised the world in 1974 by performing on a cable between the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Flyers and other materials will be distributed. Visitors will be asked to sign petitions in support of rebuilding the WTC as tall or taller. While advocates for rebuilding differ on some issues, we are united in calling for new WTC towers to be built as tall or taller. Additionally, we call for the restoration of all commercial office and retail space that was destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001. No development plan that grants the killers' wishes that gigantic landmark towers will no longer dominate the Lower Manhattan skyline can honor the victims more than it does the killers. . . any memorial in the context of such a surrender will inevitably be just evidence of America's defeat. The terrorists will have been the architects, Mohammad Atta the urban planner. We will have been cut down and commanded by the LMDC to forever remain in that abject state. We need a victory of our own, we need something to look forward to that will invoke pride and perseverance rather than sorrow and defeat. We need the towers back, as tall or taller than before or New York City will never be right again. Wherever landmark sites or entire cities have been destroyed, they have been rebuilt. The Pentagon, Hiroshima, The White House, London and Tokyo were rebuilt. But the Lower Manhattan (construction) Delay Corporation is standing in the way of rebuilding the WTC. We want our towers back! We want our skyline restored! Tell the Leave Manhattan Destroyed Corporation to get out of the way. Free the site owners and leaseholders to exercise their right to rebuild. Don't let the economy of Lower Manhattan be destroyed by inaction. Let's put the shovel in the ground and start construction NOW! Location: South End of City Hall Park at Broadway and Park Row.
